What is Botox® Cosmetics?

The Botox® that you may recognize is most famously known as a “wrinkle-relaxer” for treating facial expression lines. While it is a popular aesthetic treatment, Botox® actually originated as a treatment for eye spasms. Its cosmetic and medical applications continue to evolve and grow.

How does Botox® treat wrinkles?

When in our qualified providers’ hands, Botox® is injected into “target” muscles. These muscles contribute to squinting, frowning, and other movements responsible for treatable expression lines. In young skin, these lines only appear when squinting, frowning, etc. As the skin loses its elasticity over time, such “dynamic” lines become “static” ones. The lines appear on the face even when it is at rest. As a neuromodulator or neurotoxin, Botox® relaxes the muscles. When the treated muscle cannot contract, it does not stretch the skin and contribute to the development of creases.

Can Botox® treat all expression lines?

At the time of this writing, Botox® is FDA-approved to temporarily improve the appearance of:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Vertical glabellar or frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Wispy crow’s feet that extend from the corners of the eyes
  • Vertical platysmal bands on the neck

What is Botox® treatment like?

Since the procedure is administered precisely by a skilled and experienced medical practitioner, the effects of Botox® are targeted. Only the target muscles will be affected. Injections are efficient and are often completed in around 30 minutes. The injections are also very well tolerated, because they are applied quickly with a thin, sterile needle. Side effects are typically mild and temporary, and will not interfere with your busy schedule.

The number of treatments required and the body’s response to Botox® vary considerably from person to person. On average, the results from Botox® last between three and four months. Dr. Randall Huling and Dr. Edward Eldred lead Olive Branch Family Medical Center with a shared commitment to compassionate, patient-focused care for families across DeSoto County.

Dr. Huling, a board-certified family physician and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, founded OBFMC in 2003 after serving as Clinic Director, Chief of Primary Care, and Residency Director at Womack Army Hospital during his U.S. Army service. He continues to teach as a Clinical Instructor at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the University of Tennessee

Dr. Eldred, also board-certified in Family Medicine, joined OBFMC in 2010 after completing his residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. A lifelong DeSoto County resident, he earned his medical degree from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and his MBA from Rockhurst University.

Together, Dr. Huling and Dr. Eldred are dedicated to delivering trusted, evidence-based care that promotes lifelong health and well-being.
