How often do I need to visit your office?

The American Academy of Family Physicians generally suggests that most healthy adults visit doctors like ours at least once yearly. However, these annual wellness visits may not be appropriate for all individuals if you have one or more chronic conditions, Drs. Huling and Eldred will want to follow up with you to see how those conditions are being managed and to make adjustments as necessary. As you age, your care needs may grow. The once-a-year visit that was formerly suitable for when you were younger may be insufficient as you age, as we may need to monitor changes in your health closely and more frequently.

Why should I prioritize my family’s wellness visits?

We view these annual physicals and wellness exams as essential “touch points” along your health journey. During each visit, we take the time to listen to all concerns that you may have about your health. We also welcome any questions you may have while under our care. We are active partners in the health of all patients (and all ages), from adolescents to seniors. This conversation with you helps us understand your current needs better. We can also identify potential problems before distressing and life-altering symptoms arise or worsen.

For those with existing conditions like hypertension and diabetes, our doctors and NPs can also assess how well you may be responding to treatments and make adjustments as necessary to support your best health. These adjustments could be everything from nutritional guidance to changes in the dosage of certain medications.

What can I expect during my appointment?

More specifically, patients should expect to:

  • Discuss their medical, family, and social history
  • Answer questions about diet, exercise, use of alcohol and any nicotine-containing products, and other habits
  • Undergo a check of vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature
  • Have a complete physical examination that includes listening to your heart and lungs; checking your ears and throat; assessing your abdomen; and evaluating your reflexes
  • Discuss any risk factors that are identified and provide counseling on exercise, nutrition, smoking cessation, fall prevention, and more to address those risks
  • Review your medications and ensure you and/or your family members are current on vaccines
  • Undergo screenings that are recommended for you, based on characteristics such as your age and family history of certain cancers and diseases

Tests may also be ordered and performed quickly at our on-site lab. This capability allows us to receive results quickly, typically the following day.
